FullaBella's Journal, 11 Nov 12

Sunday Evening of an exhausting event filled weekend.

MH is sick again, pneumonia, and with his advanced lung issues it always requires hospitalization and for reasons that escape me, always escalates to the point of an ambulance trip in the middle of the night.

So that happened this morning around 2am after already having been up since 4am Saturday for a trade show so I am about to kick off and go to bed and hopefully catch up a little sleep after only getting about 2 hours sleep in the past 40 hours or so.

If posting here and journaling during this time seems callous or without the conventional 'distraught over having spouse in ICU' expected behaviour please understand this isn't our first rodeo. He has been very ill for over 10 years now and if I continued to fall apart every time he had an episode every six months there'd be no one left to pick up the pieces.

He is responding well to current treatments and I am optimistic I'll have him back home within 2-3 days. That in no way implies he'll be completely recovered; I'm just very familiar with hospitals and time limits to in-patient treatment these days. Boy could I write volumes about that topic. But not tonight.

As for the healthy eating weight loss journey it's continued despite all of this 'regular day' schedule destruction.

I'd thought ahead to this inevitable occurring and how to plan properly so that I did not make the same mistakes or allow myself to fail as I did in 2006 when he had several hospitalizations and surgeries at a time when I'd just reached my goal weight.

In the ever demanding role of care-taker I'd placed myself ... oh... last after everyone and thing. Lack of preparation led to having a car rear seat floor board full of McDonalds drive-thru window sacks as that was the closest, well lit, convenient restaurant to the hospital. That and I believe my neighbors thought I was having an affair with the Pizza Hut delivery guy because I'd return home after 9pm and they're the only delivery in town.

Two small but noted and to be dealt with issues though. Issue one is that I'm having trouble reaching my RDI of 1400 (much less my plan of last week to even exceed that to 1500 or 1600); issue two is that my weight is up 4lbs since Friday.

Yes, I know eating less is good but I'm so worried about my metabolism slowing even more. So I am 'hoping' the 'being on the go' extra activity will counteract that for now.

I believe the decreased appetite is because when I return home I've warmed up a cup of beef or chicken broth to sip while I think about dinner and take care of (pay attention to) my little dog who's definitely in need of TLC after being alone so long.

So I am trying to decide if the comforting warm broth needs to go, period. Maybe just replace it with a cleansing hot water and lemon.

And issue two - the weight gain - well, I can't imagine what I've done that would credit increased 'muscle weight' (although I'd love 'that'to be the real reason) but as I haven't been exceeding my 'actual calculated 1800' RDI I am thinking the sodium in the broth is causing water retention despite still drinking plenty of water during the day.

I need to go sleep now.

If the broth is comforting to you then keep it. And you don't sound callous at all, I've had family members that have been chronically ill and after a while you do realize that you can't fall apart a each time. If you do then you'll wind up next them one day. I hope he comes home soon!!
