FullaBella's Journal, 25 Jan 19

Friday - January 25

I know a failure to plan is a plan to fail but when you’re my age it’s not so much the plan as it is the execution of the plan. First failure: pre theater dinner was a fiasco of insane proportions. That last minute Sonic burger was a 180 from the first choice of a nice healthy sit down restaurant meal; an Unwich at Jimmy John’s was the back up if time was too limited. I’d ‘planned’ to slip a protein bar and string cheese in my handbag as I was going to the theater last night and knew I’d be very late getting home to avoid insanity like that midnight drive through window at Taco Bell. Good plans; poor follow through.

Therefore, I tiptoed to my glucose monitor with squinty eyes and gritted teeth prepared for a disheartening result so color me shocked when it wasn’t. Still too high for a fasting blood sugar but nothing near my anticipation. Go figure.

But here it is a new day; a chance to do better, be better, get better.

Hey Bella. Fail is not in our vocabulary. Got it? Good. LOL! Planning is something that you write down in a journal and you only write down things that you are 80% sure you will follow. The thing is .. YOU cannot go off plan. Even if later you think what you wrote down doesn't sound so good anymore. Just eat what is on your planner. NOW ... theater night could just be blacked out as far as what you will eat. Obviously, it is a night to be enjoyed, so don't plan anything as it is less than 80% chance you will follow anything you might have written down. You want "wins" for you day ... so that you feel like you accomplished a lot that day. So there are no "fails". Only "wins". Next theater night, black out that meal. "Wins" could be anything other than food too. Make a list of what you know you will do on your list of chores. Remember the 80% rule. On a scale of 1 - 10 ... you want it to be an 8 or better chance of doing what is on your list. You are a winner!!

Good advice and an interesting way of looking at things. Thanks Mom.

I am learning to do this myself. It is interesting. Make your 24 hr. plan enjoyable and something that you can do the rest of your life. Little things will add up eventually. Instead of that bucket of ice cream ... eat a bowl of ice cream. Baby steps. It's a process and we aren't perfect. At the end of each day assess how your day went and what can you do tomorrow to give yourself more "wins"?

Every Day is a New Day!

Mom2Boxers makes great sense. I've been where you are, 280s and 125# away from a reasonable weight, feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. Obesity to this degree, especially with blood sugar issues, is a bonafide "medical emergency." Fullabella, it's way passed foolin'-around time. You're right: You've got to plan your meals a day ahead. Make a new and firm *decision* EVERY DAY to *commit* to that plan. You can do this!

I can't eat "just" a bowl of ice cream. There is no such thing as "moderation" when it comes to my favorite binge foods. If that's true for you, don't bring it into your orbit ... Work, home, in the car: EXILE the stuff that's KILLING you. No, we're not perfect. That's why we cannot afford to tempt ourselves.

Bella, good advice here. I can't imagine have to deal with blood sugar issues. My plan is I simply adjust for a few days after but that's not always an option with diabetes. I find few on the run meals that fit into how I normally eat so just do the best I can when I have to opt for fast food. I never feel guilty if I have enjoyed a meal with family or friends as that is part of enjoying life. I do try to make choices that aren't going to trigger asthma or migraines.
