Draglist's Journal, 03 Jan 17

Woke at 220.8 and ended the day at a gratifying 214.6 before dinner (fasting until dinner each day). See my other 1/03/17 post for additional details. Ended up eating about 80 additional calories, mostly due to 400 calories of post-midnight snacking that I tacked onto today’s totals. Must. Stop. Doing. That. Bought a new “Skulpt” device, a $99 tool that measures 16 different areas of body fat and muscle quality. Works great, but (as a 35 year software tester) I think I found a few minor bugs I’m working with the company to fix. Look for a full report on my efforts with that tool soon. Spoiler: I love it and I think it’s a game changer… just needs a few tweaks before it gets my full endorsement. Happy New Year!

I'm a big fan of the Skulpt. I concur that there're a few bugs, at least in the Android software. I have both the Aim and the Chisel and get consistent variation between the two readings. I also got a Dexa scan an hour after talking a full body measurement and (to my delight) it told me I was leaner than the Skulpt. That said, I measure every morning after my shower and the results from a single device are beautifully consistent when trending. I also find it extremely useful for targeting "the weakest link" and knowing where to focus my efforts.

They have some algorithm that only accounts for the tricep, abs, and quad (the same as their "quick measure") to estimate whole body... I sent them my entire Dexa to compare the readings.

Yeah that's my experience too. In some cases the overall body fat percentage from my Skulpt is higher than any single measurement. The MQ seems to me to track somewhat better but maybe that's just optimism and ego on my part since I usually read around 98 LOL

Bill, I'd love to actually hear from you on a cross comparison between the Skulpt and a simple Accumeasure caliper with 1 point of measure if you have one. So much of what I've read is that the caliper is just fine, but you always have to wonder how many authors are paid advertisers.

So in case it helps your Skulpt evaluation I have another observation for you. They claim that hydration does not influence their readings but I beg to differ. The past 3 mornings I have been down about a pound a day. I am certain it's water as my workouts aren't changed, my intake is stable (and I count every gram of food and drink) but I started taking dandelion root caps again as a mild diuretic... I can easily see the difference in the mirror and on the scale... definition as the sheet of subcutaneous water drains away. (also the big increase in urinary output!) My Skulpt actually shows an INCREASE in fat each of these same 3 days.

@Jamrobin -> I would agree with you. From what I read on their site, this technology is the same technology as the "smart" scales using bioelectric impedance. The downfall to those scales is both hydration and that electricity takes a path of least resistance and can only measure one area of your body. It seems like the Skulpt tries to counter this by taking multiple readings all over your body and then averaging them. While this might help resolve the issue the scale version had of only measuring one spot (i.e. lower body), it does not solve hydration.

the reason it's showing an increase is the lack of water. It's not saying you have more fat, it's reading that you have less muscle (there is less water in the muscle fiber to conduct electricity). It could probably help if you trying to keep your fluid intake per day as constant as possible in order to get good readings.
