Draglist's Journal, 03 Jan 17

Woke at 220.8, up 2.8 from yesterday. I think that more reflects the time of day for my weigh in than anything else. I slept in very late yesterday so my weigh in showed the typical 2-3 pound difference that I experience in a day (I was down 3.2 yesterday from the previous day). Nothing comes that easy! I am still carrying noticeable water weight from the holidays and I started poring over old journals to try to find some key to why I am 10-15 pounds heavier than those days (mostly water, but 3-5 pounds of BF, too). I likely do have quite a bit of inflammation going on based on some health issues, so that may be part of it. Targeting 1635 calories today and will fast until dinner before eating them. Ketone strips come today so hopefully that will help to unravel some of the mystery. UPDATE: A lot to like tonight, but some head scratchers, too. In reviewing my old year’s journals last night, I found that I did the best when I averaged about a 1400 calorie per day deficit (often when I was burning 3600 and eating 2200!). Lately I've been doing more than 1200 a day deficit, but not 1400. So I walked four miles this afternoon to ensure that my daily calorie burn would be at least 1400 more than my 1640 intake (thanks, Fitbit). So I fasted until 7 pm and got a super nice 214.6 weigh in. But before that, I used my new keto strips to check my level of ketosis. And… after 24 hours of fasting (drinking nothing but water with apple cider vinegar and a squirt of Stevia and black coffee with a squirt of Stevia), I showed NO ketosis whatsoever! Is it the Stevia? Is it the non-net carbs (I only ate 26 net carbs yesterday but about 50 total)? Wow… super instructive. I usually smell the ketosis in my urine and I haven't for quite some time, but I thought perhaps my supplements were masking it. But nope, looks like no ketosis for BP. Going to have to make some adjustments to get the little stick to turn dark. In the meantime, I’ll be satisfied with the huge water loss today and we'll keep on rocking! Too much to fit in one post, so I’ll put the Tanita numbers and calories in separate journal entry.

I hope you get to the bottom of it, Bill. I know how frustrating you find these mysteries. I also hope the health issue isn't anything too drastic and sorts out fairly quickly.

A lot of medicines can cause weight gain, but inflammation will do it for sure.

I know I mentioned it before but it seems to want repeating... If you were losing at 2200 calories and you're not at less than 1700 it means you've slowed down your metabolism too much. Fasting is exactly counter productive now. What worked in the past is not always going to be the right answer. You need to rev up your metabolism, and the best way to do that is the opposite of fasting... grazing. Try a week or two of eating something every 2 hours that you're awake. Don't necessarily eat much more, just spread those calories across the whole day. (you will probably have to up your daily to about 1800 or you will feel like you're starving)
