Draglist's Journal, 06 Sep 14

Had a great eating day going right through dinner. Had a head of lettuce going bad so I chopped it up into a salad for a little extra filler. The entire thing was 50 calories. Great! Let me add a little cranberry and almond slice salad topper... Hey, there's that Girard's Caesar salad dressing that I never use anymore. I got into the 190s today, so let's splurge! I ate it all up and then logged it and FREAKED OUT! The 50 calorie head of lettuce had become a 600 calorie salad! The salad topper added 180 calories but the Caesar dressing added 350! And worse than that, it added 900 mg of sodium! Altogether, the 'extra' salad I ate added 1200 grams of sodium and 600 calories to my day (not to mention taking me over my carb limit). BOGUS! At least I worked out a lot earlier... Sodium 2161 today.

I saw this neat nutritional show along time ago - it showed a bunch people individual at the salad bar- with all their normal toppings of choice - the calories range between 1200-1800/note your sodium is still better than mine but since you have water retention issues- I know you have to watch the levels- Overall Great job as usual!!!!!!

Yep, I'm thinking the trash can may need it more than a body does. It is really easy to put extras on top of lettuce. I cringe every time I think of the times I did croutons on my salads and thick creamy dressings that touted "low fat" that was actually loaded with sugar. Add to that mess fake bacon bits and assorted seeds. And then having the nerve to think I was having a healthy meal.

Try getting the flavored balsamic vinegars. They are just awesome. Google Olive Cart. Awesome selection. Add some 1% cottage cheese to your salad for some creaminess! Don't use fat free dressing or fat free cottage cheese either. Avoid fat free. Just tell ya what I have learned and learned to live with! Best wishes!

Oh, yeah, that stuff can really add up. I'm using up those salad dressings etc. Much left at my house by someone else. One table spoon at a time. fat free is generally loaded with sugar and/or artificial stuff you don't want to eat. Fat free plain yogurt is usually (check the label) made from skim milk and culture.

I tossed a bunch of my dressings the last time I totally cleaned the frig. I now have mostly various vinaigrette left. I use raw cauliflower and celery for added crunch, maybe a bit of toasted nuts or seeds. If I add dried fruits it's just a tablespoon or so. I've looked at those crunch mixes and they do add so many calories and most lots of sodium that I've never bought them.

I'm always surprised at how fast the calories add up to when logged. Keep up the good work!
